Sustainability in Informatics Education

Mara SaeliZaal 5

Giving both teachers and students the tools to become Agents of Change

We are confronted with sustainability challenges and issues on a daily basis. Education must play a role in helping students with the needed skills, competencies and knowledge to drive meaningful change. This workshop is designed for educators curious about how to integrate sustainability in their teaching, transforming their classroom into a platform for agents of change towards a more sustainable future.

Informatics has a dual role in the sustainability discourse. While technology can provide innovative solutions to environmental problems(technologies), it also presents challenges such as energy consumption, electronic waste (e-waste) and data bias.

This workshop will offer interactive discussions and collaborative activities, where you will have the chance to explore how to integratesustainability concepts and competencies in your practice.  Participants will leave with practical tools, resources, and a network of like-minded professionals committed to fostering a generation of tech-savvy and environmentally-conscious students.

I have started my journey as a computer scientist, then moved into science education and I am now a researcher in Computer Science Education at Radboud University. My interest revolves around teachers and the special knowledge (and magic) they use to teach. I have always been interested in which pedagogical approaches help the most to foster students’ learning.
